No renewal shall take place of Lionel Messi’s contract for Barcelona and despite a preliminary agreement between the two sides, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner leaves the club.

The La Liga club highlighted “financial and structural hurdles” in a statement and blamed player registration “Spanish league laws,” which did not allow the player to sign a new deal. The previous contract of Messi expired on the 30th of June.

“This does not occur because of financial and structural barriers (Spanish Liga law) notwithstanding the agreement made by FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi with a clear purpose of both sides to today sign a new contract.

Messi will not be remaining at FC Barcelona because of this circumstance. Both sides deplore the failure to meet the player’s and the club’s requests.” FC Barcelona expresses its heartfelt appreciation to the player, and wishes him all the best in his personal and professional life for the future.”

Messi arrived in Barcelona in 2004 when he was 13 years old. He leaves after 17 seasons of glory in which he won 35 championships, including four crowns of the UEFA Champions League, 10 titles of the League, seven cups of the Rey, and 8 cups of Spanish. He did not make a public statement immediately.

At the end of the last season, Messi had been requested to leave Barcelona for free, however, the then-president Josep Bartomeu refused his petition.

Joan Laporta became the lead and seemed to be persuading Messi to remain. But Laporta previously stated the club has struggled for the player’s pay to fit within the league-controlled salary cap — even with the player’s severe cutbacks.

It stated that Messi earned EUR 138 million ($163 million) a season in the previous deal, signed in 2017.

The League said on Wednesday that it acquired $3.2 billion of private equity to enable teams to re-sign the Argentina star in Barcelona. However, the agreement with Messi was over when club executives in Barcelona on Thursday with player representatives.

Some local media stated it had altered Messi’s mind while he was here; others reported that it was the club that was unhappy by the player’s new requirements.
Barcelona has been one of the clubs most affected by the epidemic of coronavirus. Last season the League cut its pay cap and the club was attempting to free some of its players to clear cap space.

This summer, it had solely signed free agents — Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, and Eric Garcia among them — to avoid paying transfers.
